Date: 9/11/2023

Time: 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM

Please join us September 11, 2023, as we kick off the 2023-2024 year for the Historical League general membership meeting at the Arizona Heritage Center at Papago Park. A general business meeting begins at 10:00 A.M. with our speaker and lunch to follow.

Dr. Summer Cherland is the faculty director of The South Phoenix Oral History Project, a student-founded and student-led initiative to capture and preserve the under-studied history of South Phoenix. This presentation will show how the project came about and what is being learned. She will also describe how South Mountain Community College came to be, or almost didn't.

Dr. Cherland is an author, speaker, and educator. She researches, writes, and teaches about the historical significance of race and social justice in public and higher education, particularly in the urban Southwest. She is also an expert on the benefits of higher education to historically underserved populations. She is a faculty member at South Mountain Community College where she teaches American, African American, and Chicano history.

She is author of A College Down There: Resistance, Community Control, and Higher Education in South Phoenix, 1977-1981, published in the Journal of Arizona History and Student-Centered Oral History: An Ethical Guide, published by Routledge and available Spring 2024.

Lunch may be purchased online or reserve your place with Susan Howard and pay by check or cash by Thursday, September 7th at 5:00 PM. Members with reservations are responsible for payment even if unable to attend.
