Guest Day: General Membership Meeting, Speaker, & Lunch

Join us for a General Membership Business Meeting, speaker Diana Pardue on "Southwest Jewelry," and lunch at the Arizona Heritage Center.  Guests are welcome at either our January or February meeting. 

Diana Pardue is Chief Curator at the Heard Museum, where her work has focused upon both historic and contemporary Native American arts. Her publications include Symmetry in Stone: The Jewelry of Richard I. Chavez (2017), Awa Tsireh: Pueblo Painter and Metalsmith (with Norman Sandfield, 2017), Over the Edge: Fred Harvey at the Grand Canyon and in the Great Southwest (with Kathleen Howard, 2016), Native American Bolo Ties: Vintage and Contemporary Artistry co-authored with Norman Sandfield (2011), Shared Images: The Innovative Jewelry of Yazzie Johnson and Gail Bird (2007), The Cutting Edge: Contemporary Southwest Jewelry and Metalwork (1997), and Inventing the Southwest: The Fred Harvey Company and Native American Art co-authored with Kathleen Howard (1996). Three publications received regional book awards and Pardue received the 2009 Curatorial Excellence Award from the Apple Valley Foundation in California for the exhibit Mothers & Daughters: Stories in Clay. 

Lunch may be purchased online or reserve your place with Susan Howard and pay by check or cash by Thursday, January 4, 2024. Members with reservations are responsible for payment even if unable to attend.

TGen Tour & Lunch

We are very excited to have a tour of TGen (Translational Genomics Research Institute) available to us. TGen is an Arizona based nonprofit medical research institute dedicated to conducting ground breaking research with life changing results. Our recent Historymaker Dr. Jeffrey Trent is the President and Research Director and Dr. Daniel Von Hoff, another recent Historymaker, is the Physician-in-Chief and Director of Research at TGen. Our tour will concentrate on the lab centers for neurological and cancer research. 

Parking is limited so please plan to carpool. 

Lunch will follow nearby at the Sheraton Hotel. This tour will be limited to 35 people so please sign up as soon as possible.

Looking forward to a very interesting Historical League tour and nice lunch.

Guest Day: General Membership Meeting, Speaker, & Lunch

Paul Markow is a widely acclaimed photographer, specializing in advertising for companies such as Amazon and Federal Express, as well as portraits for corporate leaders. He will present "Personal Memories, Past and Present." As Paul says, "I have photographed everyone from porn stars to billionaires." His stories of his interactions with the famous and infamous are fascinating. 
Paul is the propietor of Paul Markow Photography on McDowell Road--from there he departs for shoots around the world. Most recently he worked for Amazon in London and for IDT in Belgium. Wherever he goes, he takes his ability to make a subject comfortable and relaxed in front of the camera. 
Paul is the son of Robert Markow, legendary photographer of mid-century Phoenix. A book of Robert's photos was just published by Arizona Highways and is available in the Arizona Heritage Center gift shop. 

February 5th is designated Guest Day.  Members are encouraged to bring a bring a friend to enjoy our acclaimed photographer and lunch.
