Arizona Historymakers

Since 1992, the Historical League's signature program has been Arizona Historymakers, which has honored more than 90 Arizonans for their positive impact on the state through their contributions in areas from the arts to public service. Citizens as varied as Sandra Day O'Connor, The Navajo Code Talkers, the Wallace and Ladmo team, and Calvin Goode have been recognized and their life stories have been recorded through oral histories and placed on our site. HISTORICAL LEAGUE

If you are someone who loves Arizona and its history, joining the Historical League may be right for you. In addition to raising funds for Arizona Historical Society programs, the League is social in nature. We feature lectures from historical experts at our monthly meetings held the first Monday of each month except July and August. AN ORGANIZATION FOR HISTORY LOVERS

The Arizona Historical Society is Arizona's oldest cultural organization, founded by the Arizona territorial legislature in 1864. The Historical Society is responsible for preserving Arizona's rich and dynamic history, both for present and future generations. The centerpiece of the Society in Central Arizona is the Arizona Heritage Center in Papago Park, 1300 N. College Ave, Tempe, AZ 85288. This magnificent tribute to Arizona history is a Smithsonian affiliate. The mission of the Historical League is to support the Arizona Heritage Center in Papago Park. NATIONAL HISTORY DAY IN ARIZONA

In an effort to increase interest in history for middle and high schoolers, the Historical League gives financial and volunteer support to National History Day Arizona. Students do in-depth projects on historical topics and compete in regional, state, and national competitions. This year over 40 Arizona students advanced to the national competitions in Maryland, with projects as varied as Carver High School to the Interstate Highway System to Operation Paperclip. POSTCARD CONTEST

The Historical League encourages the teaching of Arizona history to third-graders with its financial support of the Postcard Contest. Not only do the third-graders learn about Arizona, but the winners get a pizza party for their entire class. Read more.

JUNETEENTH

The Historical League is a financial supporter of the Juneteenth celebration held at the Arizona Heritage Center every June to commemorate the ending of slavery in 1865. Last year, over 600 people enjoyed the food, performances, stories and camaraderie at the museum.
