South Phoenix Historical Neighborhood Tour & Lunch

Join us for a driving tour of South Phoenix. The tour covers nearly 30 miles and features 8 points of interest south of the Salt River and includes two stops to get out and stretch your legs. Highlights include a visit to the South Mountain Preserve, a cruise past a home on the Historic Properties Register surrounded now by brand new million-dollar houses, a brief visit to the Sotelo-Heard Cemetary, a drive down "Funky Broadway" past the historic Precision Auto Parts and foundational Black churches and schools, and a stop to browse at Baseline Flowers, the last remaining shop of the Japanese Flower Gardens dynasty. No-host lunch will be at historic Ponchos Mexican Food and Cantina, on Central Avenue,  a mainstay for over fifty years.

Tour attendance is limited to 20 participants. Jolynn Clarke will keep a wait list. Email her if the tour is full and you want to go. If there is enough interest, she'll add another tour at a later date.

Cost is $25.00/person. Donation goes to South Mountain Community College-Oral Histories Project to hire student workers.

Meet at 9:45 AM at South Mountain Community College, 7050 S. 24th Street, Phoenix, AZ 85042.  Please park (free) in the lot directly west of 24th Street, near the Performing Arts Complex.  Members may want to arrange their own carpooling to SMCC.
